The Surface Breaks Review

I’ve recently finished The Surface Breaks by Louise O’Neill and OH MY GOSH it was amazing. As a feminist and a lover of mythical creatures it was my cup of tea.

The Surface Breaks is a retelling of The Little Mermaid and it blew my mind because I never thought of the story this way but it actually makes so much sense! If you love the Disney version, maybe think twice because it is very different. It’s graphic, mysterious and makes you think about so many issues and values – like womanhood, family, love, lust and self truthfulness.

The gazmos and gidgets are all still there, as is the hauntingly beautiful long red hair (which I personally would kill for) with a few characters which may not have been considered or explored in other versions. It’s super easy to read and moves at a lovely pace for the reader to follow the story. I don’t want to give too much away I personally would recommend this book to you.

PLUS THE COVER IS SO PRETTY!

Happy reading and let me know what you think!
